May be an important not for all year C1 biker
“Fuel / oil mixture “
This is my private /personal experience regarding the behaviour of the C1 at low temperatures where the automatic choke is reponsible for the air/fuel mixture
20.01.01
Not only C1 bikers who drive the C1 all year round but also good weather bikers should read this and make their own
decisions.
Maybe an important note for all year round drivers who
- only make short trips ...for example to work
- park the C1 in their carport
- store the C1 in an unheated garage
- or park the C1 outdoors
My C1 is parked outside and is used mostly for short trips (the reason why I bought it),
especially during the colder season).
I wondered why the C1 consumed more fuel ,
I asked and I was told that this is normal , because the software of the C1 is configurated in such a way that the C1 always gets the right fuel/air mixture according to the air temperature. That is the automatic starter.
Everybody knows it from cars and I was satisfied.
After a while I found that the starter only made 1 – 3 revolutions during the first cold start and reacted as if the battery power was low.
So I stopped the start and made a new cold start. The engine then started normally. I didn’t mind because it only happened on cold days. Some days later I noticed an oil spot below the C1 . I tried to find out where it came
from and this didn't take me long. It looked as though the oil was coming out of the air filter.
Please refer to photos
I called my BMW dealer. They told me to come by. I asked them if I could drive the 38 km , they said OK. I got an exchange C1 and told them that I thought there was fuel in the oil, which was verified after the
repair ( no-charge oil change ) .
My BMW dealer called BMW HQ and they wanted to know what my normal driving range was ( short trips??). I told them as above. I was told that during cold weather conditions the automatic starter changes the fuel/air mixture
( more fuel ) and
In the case of a short trip the fuel is not completely burnt and the remaining fuel leaks through the piston rings into the crank case where it gets mixed with the oil. As a result the oil/fuel level rises.
You don't notice it because it is a very slow process. If you don’t watch out for the first indications ( starter ) or do not watch the oil level often enough, the crank case fills up to the extent that the hose
connecting it to the air filter, which is responsible for compensation of high pressure between crank case and ambient, sucks in the oil/fuel mixture and lets it out through the air filter.
One week later I got the C1 back, drove it three weeks and again found the same indications as before when starting up. I pulled out the oil dip stick and the oil/fuel mixture came out of the dip stick port. I called BMW
directly and informed them. They told me to leave the C1 at home and that they would pick it up. I then got an exchange C1.
Got my C1 back two days later. It was very quick, wasn't it ?

ĂĽbrigens lagen zwischen dem Ersten und dem Zweiten Mal Ă–lwechsel nur etwa 300km
By the way, between the first and the second oil change there had only been 300 km.

I insist on BMW honouring their slogan: ”A vehicle for the city ”
In other words, developed for the short trips.

P.s.
My BMW dealer told me they would inform me if any modifications of the control box were necessary.
I can live with that !!!
